IT’S A MOVIE IT’S A DREAM
It’s a movie, it’s a dream
There’s a screen
Where today becomes tomorrow
There’s a car and a plane
There’s a train
Making stops at all our sorrows
There’s a fountain in a truck stop
Where the kids stop
To make wishes with their quarters
While we wait for the shower
Every hour
Another trip across the border
I came in
Through the screen door
Like I knew where I was going
Ran down the sand dune
To the water
Just in time to see it glowing
There was sadness
In the sunlight
As I threw the final pitches
And I looked up
In the window
To see someone washing dishes
It’s a movie, it’s a dream
In this scene
We’re not sure what’s gonna happen
There are choices to be made
In the shade
I could swear I saw her laughing
As she took off all her clothes
And then she rose
And took another bite of apple
And I saw I had one too
And then I knew
We were kneeling in the chapel
On the platform
We were waving
As we squinted in the sunlight
As the faces
Brushed before me
I knew all that wasn’t done right
Little children
Making faces
A their laughter turned to crying
I said, “Cheer up
It’s ok now
It’s not like anybody’s dying”
I walked slowly
To the basement
And I could only beg for mercy
I found water
In the kitchen
And I drank ‘cause I was thirsty
At the table
Sat a family
With a glow upon their faces
And I broke down
Drawing pictures
Running round and round the bases
I could see him
At the old house
And he looked like he was taller
We took the back way
To the drugstore
Clutching tight to our last dollar
We ate ice cream
In a spotlight
As the sunset hit the canyon
And the bike path
Led to beaches
And the rocks where we were standing
And we looked out
At the lighthouse
As it stood upon the nightstand
Put the bookmark
In the story
‘Cause I don’t want it to end
I came in
Through the screen door
Like I knew where I was going

AS THIS ALL PASSES AWAY
Hey, been trying to find you
Walking up and down this beach
Searching for a fire still burning
O, this place
O, it reminds me
I can't recognize your face
It's not glowing in the moonlight
And so close that I could kiss you
I am young and I am old
I am swimming in the starlight
And I splash into the sunshine
Eating sandwiches on sweet rye
I am little, I am happy
Holding on to something that we know
The sand is always shifting
As we watch these children grow
Riding on our bikes into the sun
It's all changing when I see you
Where have they all gone
There was never anyone
Hey, you know I've missed you
Come and open up the house
Did you think this all was over
Put your feet upon the cool floor
Does it feel like it's still sandy
Are you falling from the front door
It may be that season left the world
We may have missed each other
Or any other girl
This may be a movie or a dream
But it's as real as anything you've ever seen
As real as you and me
Hold me in your arms
As this all passes away

In the Mountains

IN THE MOUNTAINS
I can hear your voice
Ringing out so true
A melody more pure
Than anything that I could do
I can smell the campfire
The chill air in my nose
I follow you at night
Along a path that no one knows
Spend the night up in the mountains
Resting underneath the trees
In the morning we wake up to a sunrise
More beautiful than any one I’ve seen
And I want so much to tell you
Everything you mean to me
How your eyes are so wide open
Like I always wished to see
And I can see you flying
With that smile upon your face
And I know that you are wrapped up
In an ever-loving grace
And I pray this song will take you
Home to mountains you’ve never seen
With the flowers and the sunshine
I wish I could see the wonder in your eyes
Like you’re waking to a dream

On the Road

ON THE ROAD
It’s getting on towards evening
The dusk is falling late
The summer pushes back the veil of time
Passed through all the construction
Now it’s been clear on the interstate
All the way from Cleveland to the Indiana line
It was hazy in the morning
Baking hot in the afternoon
If the evening cools at all I’ll be surprised
It’s all so familiar
Or it feels like it’s too soon
Like the future’s waiting just over the rise
And the white line’s before me
Stretching out into the night
And I’m speeding with the windows down
Looking for the city lights
And I feel the engine turning
With all that came before
I swore that I was leaving
I’m not going back no more
I’m on my own now
I’m on the road
Running every red light on memory lane
From 95 out to the 101
Under a sky so starry that you can’t feel any pain
I pull over and just wait for the sun
Coming in to Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks
I wonder if I’ve ever really known someone
Tucumcari to Tallahassee
Telluride to Tennessee
Maybe I’ve always been a little on the run
And it’s all there before me
Everything I’ve ever seen
And as much as I keep looking
I still don’t know what it means
Where the mountains meet the prairie
Where the gravel meets the stream
Where the stars go on forever
And everything that's in between
I’m not alone now
I’m on the road
I dreamed a highway
That cuts across the years
From the first time I saw mountains
To the last time I was here
I dreamed a highway
Turning green and gold
I am wonder, I am wisdom
I am young and I am old
Now the white line’s before me
Stretching out into the night
And I’m speeding with the windows down
Looking for the city lights
And I feel the engine turning
With all that came before
But this is somewhere else now
I’m not going back no more
I’m not alone now
I’m on the road

Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES
Did you find Los Angeles
Did you see the end of the road
Did the sun set in the west
Did the evening sky explode
Did you cover up your eyes
Or were they open wide
Did you learn anything from this
Did you find Los Angeles
O, all the words
You tried to name it
To catch every butterfly
Pin it down, get it right
O, an answer
So clean you couldn't stain it
Watch it fade away with the coming of the night
Did you find Los Angeles
What did you see along the way
Did a morning full of mist
Turn to the green and blue of day
Did the mountains turn your face
To the outpouring of grace
Did you take in all of this
Did you find Los Angeles
O, let me see the things that matter
Embracing all of it is the only way to heal
No matter how many illusions must be shattered
Love is broken
Love is damaged
Love is real
Did you find Los Angeles
Did you meet someone out there
Did you feel the sweetest kiss
Did you learn to care
Did you lay down all your pride
Did you have nothing left to hide
Did you give it all your best
Did you find Los Angeles
O, do you see
The sky is open
Do you see everyone crying out
The same as you
O, detachment is a lie when we're all broken
And it takes the human touch to make love real
Did you find Los Angeles
Did you leave it all at home
Does that person still exist
Is there more you haven't shown
Does it even matter now
When we've broken every vow
Should we learn to live like this
Did you find Los Angeles
O, see the lights spread out below you
See the lights above scattered all across the sky
There's an ocean in the blackness of the distance
There's a black ocean in the distance between you and I
Did you find Los Angeles
Can it even be believed
Can love cross this abyss
Would it even be received
As the ocean teems with life
As the stars fill up the night
As we look out just like kids
Did you find Los Angeles

On the Night

ON THE NIGHT
On the night
And the blood is rushing
I can feel
Everyone is in this city is moving
Everyone in this city
Is alive
Can you feel it
Like a rhythm, like a thunder
Like a train rolling under the ground
Can you feel it
I wanna come together
I wanna come
Together
And it’s only a put-on
You don’t need my explanations
This could be tender
This could be revelation
On the night
And this isn’t a movie
Reaching out
For some kind of connection
Looking for any kind of connection
Reaching out
For a spark
To feel alive
Can you feel it
Like a rhythm, like a thunder
Like a train rolling under the ground
Can you feel it
Getting faster, getting closer
Like we’re crashing into each other
We’re gonna crash
Does it have to be so insecure, love
Can you really see me
Do I really want you to
I only want to hold on to you
To feel the way you feel me
To feel what you feel
To feel you as real

Come In

COME IN
Come in
There’s a place for you
Pull back the curtain
I know what troubles you
Lay down your burden
O the dark isn’t gonna lay down
And the light isn’t going out
Oh no, the dark isn’t gonna lay down
And the light isn’t going out
It’s time
To look at what you’ve been carrying around
It’s time
To look at everything
You were a child
You had a hold on something
You were running with the wolves
You were a fire
You were a dancer
You were a bearer of love in this world
When you woke, everything had changed
It’s never gonna be the same again
When you woke, everything had changed
It’s never gonna be the same again
Take a walk up to the house
It’s gonna be any minute now
Take a walk up to the house
Everything is different now
Nobody’s gonna tell you that you’re not good enough
Nobody’s gonna tell you that you don’t measure up
No more hiding who we are
No more covering the scars
It’s all coming in
It’s all coming in
In this unholy mess
It’s all coming in
It’s all coming in
This is forgiveness
O the dark isn’t gonna lay down
And the light isn’t going out
Oh no, the dark isn’t gonna lay down
And the light isn’t going out
Come in
There’s a place for you
Come in

Broken Love

BROKEN LOVE
Broken love
Broken love
Is all that I can give you
It’s not enough
But it’s enough
It’s all we’ve got to hold on to
We’re stuck in time
With stars that shine
Through an atmosphere of air
And the colors of our hair
Joy remembers joylessness
And joy kneels
All of this is real
And all that we can feel
Is broken love
There’s a glow in the kitchen
From the microwave light
When you get out of bed
In the middle of the night
And you walk through the summer
And you walk through the snow
And we’re holding hands now
Like we know where to go
And the dusk it is falling
On these quiet streets
There’s a light from the house
Like we know where to meet
There are voices and crying
And a stinging of pain
And the hurt is so real
Now it’s starting to rain
The washing of water
The smell of a place
The smiles and the love
Like a stream down your face
In the gathering twilight
The gathering storm
Beyond the walls of the city
Where hope’s being born
And the night is so silent
The night is so wild
O the fear and the trembling
Like the eyes of a child
I’ll take on your burden
And I’ll watch you go
When it all comes together
It’s all made of broken love
Broken love
